Why Zone Selection Matters at Bandhavgarh
Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has 4 main safari zones with vastly different characteristics. Choosing the wrong zone can mean the difference between 3 tiger sightings and zero.
This guide breaks down each zone so you can make the right booking.
Zone 1: Tala — The Crown Jewel
Entry Gate: Tala Gate
Status: Core area — highest tiger density in India
Availability: Books out fastest (60–90 days in advance for peak season)
Why Tala?
Tala zone sits in the heart of Bandhavgarh and has consistently the highest tiger sighting rates in India. The iconic Bandhavgarh Fort overlooks the zone, adding a dramatic backdrop to sightings.
Best time in Tala: February to May (waterholes concentrate tigers)
Warning
If you can only visit once, book Tala — but book it 3 months in advance.
Zone 2: Magdhi — Underrated Excellence
Entry Gate: Magdhi Gate
Status: Core zone
Availability: Easier to get than Tala, but still popular
Magdhi combines open grasslands and rocky terrain with good tiger and leopard activity. The zone is connected to Tala, meaning tigers often move between the two.
Best for: Travellers who couldn't get Tala permits, leopard sightings, rocky terrain photography.
Zone 3: Khitauli — The Hidden Gem
Entry Gate: Khitauli Gate
Status: Buffer zone
Availability: Easiest to book
Khitauli has a mix of grassland and dense sal forest with several water bodies. While tiger sightings are less frequent than Tala, the zone offers:
- Large herds of spotted deer and sambar
- Wild dog (dhole) sightings
- Less crowded safari experience
- More relaxed naturalist walks post-safari
Best for: Families with children, first-time visitors who want a relaxed experience.
Zone 4: Dhamokhar — The Peaceful Buffer
Entry Gate: Dhamokhar Gate
Status: Buffer zone
Availability: Easiest, least tourist traffic
Dhamokhar is the buffer zone for serious nature lovers who prefer tranquility. Tiger sightings happen but are less frequent.
Best for: Photography, birding, those doing 4–5 day stays with multiple zone experiences.
Zone Comparison Table
